Q. Why did you start studying for the TOEFL test, and what was your target score?
I needed a TOEFL score for a student exchange program. I scored 96 points on my first TOEFL test, but my Speaking and Writing scores were significantly lower than Reading and Listening scores. A TOEFL score of 100 was required to apply to my preferred colleges in the UK or US.

Q. What was the problem with the TOEFL course at the institute?
Memorizing the speaking and essay templates was not effective. Specifically, the templates were not very beneficial for integrated questions. I doubted my scores did not improve due to the standardized templates.
Also, it took so long to get the instructor’s feedback on my speaking and writing responses, which I thought inefficient. I didn’t have enough time to wait for the instructor’s feedback.

For speaking, I practiced composing my response with my opinion, reasons, my own experience, and supporting ideas, which I found a lot more accurate and logical. Therefore, I could get high scores in my actual test.

1. Focus and prioritize
You don’t have to focus on your weak areas if you don’t aim to get full scores. It is much easier to get higher scores by mastering your strong areas.
2. Manage your time efficiently
If you study while working full-time, time management is a key to success. I studied vocabulary words and listened to the LC audio files while commuting. I had only 2 hours to study a day, so I made the best use of my time.

TOEFL iBT is an expensive exam. I recommend not spending too much time on preparing for the test. Finish it in one or two months.
Taking tutoring sessions is highly recommended if you aim to get higher scores in writing and speaking sections. Tell your tutor what you expect from the sessions. That helped me to take a personalized class.
